Vapor Rub

Vapor Rub

It has been a while since I have posted.  Thank you for being loyal and continuing to follow me.  It was well worth your wait as I am really excited to share this recipe with you!!

At some point this fall or winter, I am willing to bet that someone in your home will get all congested in the head. Children become petri dishes when they are in daycare.  I know firsthand!  The recipe below will help everyone in your home sleep better during these icky times.

There is controversy over whether petroleum (found in vapor rubs such as Vicks) is carcinogenic.  Life is short.  Why chance it?  Either way, this recipe is super easy, fast (10 minutes!), and calming.  You will love it!  I promise.

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp beeswax pastilles (found in health food stores or here)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 9 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
  • 2 drops rosemary essential oil

Put beeswax in a double boiler and heat until melted.  Add coconut oil and olive oil.  Mix until coconut oil is liquified.  Add essential oils and mix well.  Remove from heat and pour into jars right away (I upcycled baby food jars).  Let vapor rub sit overnight to let the essential oils infuse.  Place a lid on rub and use as needed.

It is best to use vapor rub within 3 months of making it.  Simply for the germ factor.  Putting germy fingers into the rub and then reusing it, etc.  You get the point.

-Feel free to experiment with the scent!  I suggest these essential oils:  eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, and peppermint.

-If you’d like a ‘thicker’ vapor rub, use more wax

-If you’d like a ‘thinner’ vapor rub, use more olive oil

-When using on children, rub it on their chest and feet (with socks on).  When your child has a persistent cough, rubbing this on their feet helps! (Helps Mom and Dad get more sleep, too!)

-If you are making this for a child, always dilute by using more wax/oils and less essential oils.

-If you are making this for a child, never place rub directly beneath nose.

Please comment to inquire about purchasing my vapor rub.  I will direct you from there!

    Will be trying this…. Thanks!

  2. Love this idea granolaSiL…if you have any extra i would appreciate the opportunity to test before making myself. I don’t know what a double boiler even is :)

    • I do have some extra that you can test! A double boiler is one pan on top of another pan with water in it. Or you can take an empty glass jar and place it in a pan with an inch of water in the pan. Place ingredients in the jar. We an make it together sometime, if you want!

  3. Very interesting replacement for Vicks. Good job Wendi!
